Getting geared up to begin fly fishing does not need to be a ridiculously expensive proposition. Here is the basics of what you need.
As many folks will tell you, when you begin, it will be a multiple of years before your casting ability exceeds the limits of a basic setup. That translates to, don't spend a bunch of money for your first setup unless you want to for vanity sake. The two setups here represent a good starting point. The first is at the very low end range, but perfectly adequate.

A vest is a necessary piece of fly fishing gear. You simply cannot do without this. Vests run the gambit from very low in price to hundreds of dollars. Having had vests at the low end, I can tell you that a few extra dollars spent are ones well spent. This vest is well under $100 and will absolutely get you through most any applications.

Basic Floating Fly Line...Probably What You Want to Start With

Next comes the lines you will need to ready your setup for fishing. Here is a good basic floating line.

Fly Line Backing...Between Spool and Fly Line

Backing joins the spool of your fly reel to the fly line itself.

Tapered Leader...Choose Appropriate Size...Available from 0x-7x

The tapered leader joins your fly line to your terminal tackle.

Tippet Material

Tippet material is used to lengthen your tapered leader. This leader is monofilament. Many are now using fluorocarbon, a more expensive but less visible alternative.
